The winter holiday season for some might be filled with stress, family, and strong emotions and for others it may be a relaxing time to slow down and enjoy life more fully.

Wherever you fall on this spectrum the one thing we all have in common is the hit the season takes on our immune system.

I’m not a fan of flu shots, but I do think we need to take precautions to keep our immune systems strong and resilient. Even when we do get sick we can improve our chances to bounce back with more ease.

Here are three things that have REALLY helped me stay healthy and resilient!

1. Alternate Nostril Breathing (Nadi Shodhana)

Not only does this breath practice help clean out those nasal passages it also helps balance the left and right hemispheres of the brain leaving us feeling calm and balanced. A calm and balanced nervous system in turn allows our immune system to do it’s job optimally. It can increase our flow of prana, or vital energy, leaving us more resilient in the face of all those incoming germs!!

2. Super Immunity Tea

Ingredients:

4 cloves garlic
5 slices of ginger (about 1/4″ each)
1 lemon, halved
5 sage leaves (or a handful of ground sage)
1 teaspoon tumeric
1 teaspoon coriander or a few sprigs of fresh cilantro
Honey (to taste)

Instructions:

Bring 4 quarts water to a boil in a large pot. Add ginger and boil for just a minute or so. Turn heat to low and allow to cook for a few minutes before adding other ingredients. Do not allow combination to boil once they’re all together. Allow the tea to steep at least 10 minutes before drinking.

Leave the ingredients in the liquid, drink only the liquid. Sweeten with honey only after it is cool enough to drink. Drink the whole pot throughout the day.

3. Thieves Essential Oil

Ok, this stuff is crazy effective! Without exaggeration, this essential oil blend has saved me from getting sick about 97% of the time. It’s a combination of Clove bud oil, Lemon peel oil, Cinnamon bark oil, Eucalyptus leaf oil, and Rosemary leaf oil.

I put a drop under my tongue and swoosh it down with warm water a few times a day when I’m feeling like something is coming on. You can also put a drop in your tea or rub a couple drops onto the bottom of your feet.
